How to Renew A CPCS Competent Operator Card
Posted 19 May 2026
Holding a CPCS Competent Operator Card shows that a cardholder has the skills, knowledge and experience to operate plant machinery safely on site. Cards are valid for five years and need to be renewed upon expiry.
You can check card validity on the CPCS Card Checker which is a free online tool that allows confirmation to whether a card is valid.
Below is a guide that explains when torenew, what is required at renewal, and what cardholders need to do if their card has already expired.
When should CPCS Competent Operator Cards be renewed?
CPCS Competent Operator Cards card can be renewed up to 3 months prior to the expiry date stated on the card with CPCS Competent Operator Cards having a 5 year grace period in order to renew. The grace period is purely for renewal purposes and does not mean that the cardholder can operate on site.
What are the renewal requirements for a CPCS Competent Operator Card?
To renew a CPCS Competent Operator Card, the cardholdermust demonstrate their knowledge, safety awareness and operating experience are all up to date. This is done through:
- A valid Health Safety &Environment (HS&E) Test,
- Renewal CPD, and
- Ongoingpractical ability such as an up-to-date digital logbook, On-Site Assessment or Practical Test
A valid HS&E Test
AHealth, Safety and Environment (HS&E) Test must be achieved within the last two years at the point the renewal is applied for. This can either be the NOCN HS&E test or the CITB HS&E test.
If the HS&E Test has already expired, it will need to retaken before submitting the renewal application.
Complete the Renewal CPD
The cardholder will need to complete the CPCS Renewal CPD, which replaced Renewal Tests in 2024. This is an online, e-learning process designed to refresh knowledge rather than assess under exam conditions.
The Renewal CPD is completed via the NOCN Hub and can be done at home. Only a laptop or tablet and a stable internet connection is needed.
The CPD modules relate to the categories held on the Competent Operator card and are grouped into:
- Earth Moving and Compaction
- Lifting and Lifting Equipment
- Piling and Pumping of Materials
- Lifting Supervision and Management
- Demolition
Show Ongoing Practical Ability
A digital logbook is used to evidence ongoing operating experience and lifelong learning. It records plant operating hours and helps demonstrate that the cardholder meets the minimum 300-hour requirement per category for renewal. Keeping the logbook up to date makes the renewal process quicker and easier.
Alternatively an On-Site Assessment or Practical Test with a CPCS Accredited Test Centre can be completed in order to renew if the hours have not been completed in a logbook.
Submit the renewal application (F1/3)
Once a valid HS&E Test, relevant Renewal CPD and ongoing practical ability have been completed, the renewal application can be submitted online at: https://renew-cpcs.nocn.org/
What if the CPCS Competent Operator Card has expired?
- If a cardholder’s CPCS Competent Operator Card has already expired, but is within the 5 year grace period after the expiry date, the card is still able to be renewed as above. After the 5 year grace period the cardholder will be required to re-enter the CPCS Scheme.
When a cardholders competent operator card has expired some time ago, it’s best to contact CPCS directly or speak to an Accredited Test Centre for guidance.
